UAN's annual Animals' Choice Award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding commitment to bring animals out of crisis and into care. The award includes a grant to help the cause or organization to which the individual has contributed.
Past recipients of the Animals’ Choice Award include:

Paula Bacon, former mayor of Kaufman, Texas, for her work to end horse slaughter in her town and the nation. Bacon was an outspoken opponent of the horse slaughterhouse located in Kaufman, which faced numerous violations and citizen complaints in 27 years of operation. [read more]

The Chief of the Governor's Division of Emergency Management in Texas, for telling residents to bring their pets with them when they evacuated in advance of Hurricane Rita in 2005.

Alison Gianotto, founder of Pet-Abuse.com, for her work to raise awareness of the seriousness of animal cruelty and advocate for stiffer penalties for those who commit acts of violence against animals.

Bay Area (CA) Search and Rescue team of three rescued pit bulls and their courageous and able leader, Kristine Crawford, for all they do to elevate the status of pit bulls while saving human lives.

Newfoundland, Canada Sisters Katie and Emma Harvey (nine and seven years old respectively) who organized a mission to save horses starving from drought.

Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio for cracking down on animal cruelty in his community and setting up a system to care for the animal victims of abuse at an unused jail in downtown Phoenix.

University of Illinois veterinary student Linnaea Stull for convincing her school to use alternative educational tools in first-year physiology labs instead of killing animals during instruction.
Animals' Choice Award recipients have taken action on an animal issue that is beyond the normal scope of their profession or avocation. Their choice to stand up for animals - when they might have chosen a less challenging path - paves the way for their peers to follow their example.
