UAN 2006 Press Release

Personal Animal Disaster Planning Handbooks Available

One-of-a-kind resource aims to make evacuating with pets simple

SACRAMENTO, CA (August 25, 2006) – Today United Animal Nations (UAN) announced the availability of its brand-new Personal Disaster Planning Handbook, which will help pet owners make sure their animal family members are safe when disaster strikes.

This one-of-a-kind guide is completely customizable. In addition to providing disaster planning tips and step-by-step instructions on assembling supplies to create a “pet disaster kit,” it offers space in which pet owners can record their personal disaster information, such as:

  • Evacuation locations, including friends, relatives and pet-friendly hotels
  • Emergency contact information
  • Pet health information
  • Contact information for local animal shelters

The booklet also features a pocket for storing photos – often necessary to proove ownership when pets get lost or become separated from their families – and vaccination information.

UAN President and CEO Nicole Forsyth  said the handbook fills a gap among the many disaster planning materials that are currently available. “For years UAN has encouraged people to make disaster plans for their pets, and now we are offering them one central location where they can record and store all of the information they will need if they have to evacuate due to disaster,” she said.

The Personal Disaster Planning Handbook is available for $3 at www.uan.org. Order yours here .

Now celebrating its 20th year, United Animal Nations (UAN) is North America ’s leading provider of emergency animal sheltering and disaster relief services and a key advocate for the critical needs of animals.
